Is the Moon a Planet?!
It is a highly debatable topic. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, is it a duck? Well, we guess it all depends on the requirements for being a ‘duck’ then! Even though the Moon is in a spherical shape and has detectable geological movements, the IAU does not recognize the Moon being a planet; instead, it is categorized as a “natural satellite”. The ‘Big Cheese’ only meets 2 of the 3 standards set out by the IAU and it orbits around Earth instead of the Sun. However, each year the Moon is slightly drifted away from Earth. Could this mean that in the future the Moon will be considered as a planet? Or, will it be considered as a different category of planet? As time passes, is there a possibility that the requirements for being planets will change? Share your thoughts.
